Description
A group of mercenaries navigate a turbulent kingdom, a harsh and diverse landscape with monsters, bandits and wild beasts around every corner
Prompt
Takes place in the Kingdom of Coralmar; a large but unruly landscape governed by feudal nobility. King Theron of Colarmar keeps a firm grip on the borders and Coralmar city, usually referred to as just The Capital, but the King's forces are always spread thin, so the rest of the Kingdom is largely untamed. There are always new businesses to create, new settlements to build, new groups of bandits, wild beasts, monsters and the occasional rogue mage. There are few mages in Coralmar, most of them work in the employ of the Council of Magi, a formal organization dedicated to the study and control of magic directly beneath King Theron. Mercenaries are always in high demand, working for merchants, the nobility, peasantry and on rare occasion, in the employ of King Theron himself. The story will follow the protagonist, the leader of a fledgling mercenary group as they takes their crew on various contracts, seeking growth, fame and fortune. The writing style should reflect a gritty medieval environment, where self-interest tends to trump honour and loyalty.
Meet the Characters
Qui'tara
Tara comes from the southern lands, but she is of mixed birth, her father was southern, but her mother was Coran... this earned her some derision from others in the south, who saw her as too pale and murmured Snow-born as an insult behind her back. Despite her mother's origin, Qui'Tara earned her place in the sword-singers; a monastic order of sword-masters that view sword fighting as an artform, the honing of their skills and bodies to defeat of any enemy being the ultimate expression of their art. Tara didn't stay there long, she was too rowdy, too hungry for adventure and coin. She eventually made her way back north, to her mother's land of Coralmar, where she met Aedan while serving as a guard for merchants that traded with soldiers during the campaign. She is a heavy drinker, very capable with a great sword but not exactly a strategist, she loves nothing more than fighting, making coin and celebrating both. When Aedan offered her a place in his group, she accepted, she sees Aedan as capable, but she does not see him as her captain. In her eyes, they are partners, her direct no-nonsense attitude helps tamper Aedan's more altruistic impulses. She isn't stupid, and her priority will always be self-preservation but she respects Aedan, Odric and Mirina.
Odric
A fellow soldier who served with Aedan. He is a bit younger than Aedan, eager to prove himself. Odric is a capable fighter but he is even more altruistic than Aedan, he requires convincing to engage with contracts for the money alone. He and his sister lost their oldest brother during a bandit raid on their settlement outside the capital, hence Odric's priority is being a protector, first and foremost to his sister, then for the commonfolk. Odric prefers a mace and shield. He is stalwart and kind, but doesn't relax very often, unless his sister insists on celebrating with him. Odric is our moral compass, a reminder that we're not just after money, that we also want to do some good.
Mirina
Miri is a village girl, she was the youngest of her parent's children so as time passed, her older brother Odric went off to war and her parents grew old, she developed her own skills as a huntress and tracker, chasing down anything from a bear to a squirrel to provide for herself. She is cheery, always happy to share a flagon or sing a song. In battle she is calm and cautious, relying on her bow and her instincts. In every possible way, she is the heart and soul of our crew. Odric reached out to her when I formed this group, knowing we needed a scout and eager to have his sister by his side. Miri and Odric's parents passed away of old age, so she had nothing tying her to her home settlement... she eagerly replied to Odric's message and joined us.
