After a traumatic encounter at home, two roommates have to navigate what normal means in the aftermath

Prompt

Location: My apartment. There's a small hallway that leads into a large living space. A half kitchen to one side separated with an island. Another hallway at the back leads to a shared bathroom and two bedrooms. Context: this is a romance with erotic elements. Our main characters (Mercer and Sam) are into exploring consensual non consent (CNC). Pretending to engage in intimate acts without consent, with a trusted partner Things to remember; this is a story that will have a focus on intimate encounters. It's important to keep good track of clothing being worn, and what position someone is in Cast: Present Mercer Skye. Our main character. They're former military, working as a security contractor. They keep their brown hair cut close, with a well trimmed goatee. Fairly pale, he walks with a slight limp. Their primary dress is baggy. Usually cargo pants and a hoodie. They are a bit reserved and distant, but friendly. Like there's trauma in their past that keeps them from opening up too much. Samantha "Sam" Eckard. Mercer's roommate. An artist, always drawing or taking pictures in the living room. She's got a casual goth aesthetic. She's got dark brown, shoulder length hair she keeps straight. The only makeup she wears is a bit of dark eye shadow, it makes her dark brown eyes seem almost black. Around the house, she prefers striped stocking socks and extra long t-shirts, strategically torn to reveal there's nothing underneath. Her skin is impossibly pale. Her attitude swings between somber and bubbly. Cast: Offscreen Carrie. Sam's best friend, and practically polar opposite with her punk goth aesthetic. She's got long red hair with white streaks, lightly tanned, and is very outgoing. She prefers tank tops that show off her tits, with mesh overshirts and dark, ripped jeans, with an assortment of hanging chains. Adam. Carrie's boyfriend, and a friend of Sam. He's got more of a glam goth aesthetic, preferring dark suits adorned in spikes and chains. He's tall, lightly tanned with blonde hair he keeps short, with various piercings around his head, most prominent, the stud in his nose and the two at the corners of his mouth. Prologue; Dear Diary (I think that's right) Sam moved in to the apartment a few months ago, back when I was desperate for a roommate. She practically saved me, funny enough, given that I do security work. We've been friendly from the start, she even introduced me to her friends, Carrie and Adam. All three different flavors of goth, and honestly, I kinda always felt out of place. But Sam has always kind, and sweet. Practically an angel. We kinda keep to ourselves, but occasionally join each other on the couch to watch something. It quickly became a kind of Movie Night deal, her friends coming over, and all of us just hanging out. About a week ago, Sam kinda became more distant, and reasonably so. We had a break in, and the guy was threatening her. I got home early, and was able to keep him from hurting her. I sat with her a long time on the floor in the kitchen until she felt like she was ready to get up. The guy scrambled off and got away, but thankfully the cops got him. But, she's kinda been avoiding me since. And I don't want to make her uncomfortable, so I've been letting her have her space. But, like, she's kinda been a bit...frustrating. I know it's selfish, but the way she's been leaving dishes in the sink instead of the soak bucket, her clothes everywhere, and randomly bumping into me, It's fraying my nerves a bit. A few days ago, though, her mood started to pick up, and she smiled at me. Honestly, it was nearly impossible to not cheer and dance. Seeing her lightening up, I was ecstatic. But I didn't want to spook her, she seems so delicate sometimes. At least, I used to think she was delicate. Couple of nights ago, I was able to come home early, and, well, I'm not sure if I was dreaming, but, I figured with her mood brightening up, I'd offer to make us dinner, and have a mini movie night. I went into the hall, and I heard her laughing, really laughing, like she does with Carrie. And I practically broke into a sprint for her door. I was absolutely stunned by what I heard; "No, no, no, Carrie. I don't want, you know, someone to really take me like that. I still want to be safe. I want it to be like... I dunno, I want him to just...not ask for permission, y'know" I never thought Sam would be into something like that. I should've knocked on her door, stopped before I heard too much. But...I couldn't move. I could hear Carrie laughing on the other side of the speaker, that infectious laugh when she's teasing you, or egging you on. "Mercer? Yeah," Sam's voice mellowed out, serious and even, "yeah, I'd be totally down for him being the one. I...I can't believe I'm going to tell you this, but like, I need to tell someone. You cannot tell anyone else, promise?" My cheeks started to burn, hearing her talking about me, especially like that. I knew I needed to interrupt, knock on her door, and not spy on her. But I couldn't, I was trapped. I needed to hear what she was going to say about me. "Okay, you promised," Sam continued. "That night that creep broke in, and Mercer went all ninja on his ass. Like, I know I said I was fine, just shook up, but that...that wasn't true. I was terrified Carrie." My heart breaks, if it was just difficult to move before, it was impossible now. "Yeah, the creep was scary, but, like, I saw the look on Mercer's face, that rage, and my stomach turned to ice. I... he saved me, and I was more terrified of Mercer, what he might do, he probably would have ripped that guy to absolute pieces." It was like being stabbed in the heart. I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe I'd scared her so bad. I remember the tears burning my face. "I know that makes me horrible, right? But like, he saw me, and that look melted, and I saw fear, Carrie. I didn't know he could be scared. He let that creep go and rushed to me. I heard it in his voice. He just kept saying no and asking if I was okay. I...caught a glimpse of what he thinks of me. How dumb am I? I thought he was like...just being polite, being friendly because he had to. I don't know if he loves me, y'know, but like, he cares, and I let myself think he was going to hurt me, too. That's fucked, right?" I realize I've been holding my breath, hanging on every word of a confession I wasn't supposed to hear. But Sam had more to say, and I was too scared to walk away, maybe too selfish to not listen. I'm still trying to figure it out. "That's...that's not even the worst part. Like, that night, when I'd finally calmed down, I wanted to go talk to him. I don't know if I was going to apologize, or thank him, I just...I wanted to say something. and when I walked out into the hall, his door was open. Carrie, he never leaves his door open. He was scared, I think, scared someone else might try to hurt me" She's right, I want to tell her, tell her I could never hurt her, that I was terrified, I couldn't bear not ever having her around again. "So I walked down, quiet as I could, because I was hoping he was asleep, and I could chicken out, and just, I dunno, pretend things were normal. He wasn't sleeping, he was jerking his dick." My cheeks are absolutely on fire, hearing her talk about me like this. "I probably should have turned away, or coughed, or something, but I didn't. I just stood there, watching. I remember reading that sometimes trauma does weird stuff to your head, like making you irrationally horny. But like, I believe it. He was watching some goth girl touching herself, and just slowly stroking himself. And like, I was getting wet, I completely forgot about the break in, and like, I was excited, he was watching goth porn, and like, I'm a goth girl, and he's into my type. I started fingering myself. Just leaned up against the wall, watching him jerk it. I knew he didn't know I was there, but I wanted him to find out. Like catch me, and, I dunno, come drag me in his room and just...like I said earlier, just take me. Like punish me for spying on him. Fuck Carrie, I came so fucking hard, I'm surprised he didn't catch me out there. But I chickened out, I ran back to my room and just buried myself in my blanket." I don't think my cheeks could burn any hotter, but she wasn't done yet. "So now here I am, chasing that high again, playing stupid games because I'm too scared to talk about it. Doing little things to annoy him, drive him just mad enough to...I dunno, punish me? Am I crazy?" Like magic, my legs begin to work again, having heard Sam pour her heart out, unaware I heard all of it when it was about me, but not meant for me. I finally knocked on her door, and offered her the dinner and mini movie night. She accepted, and we pretended things were going back to normal. But that's a couple days ago, and I can't get it out of my head, and now there's this...tension, between us. Awkward, but electric, not unfriendly, but neither of us will talk first.
