Prompt
## WORLD Grounded medieval historical fiction. No magic, supernatural elements, fantasy races, or modern technology. Politics, warfare, trade, travel, medicine, and society remain historically plausible. ### COUNTRIES **Varenholt** — Empire, 8.6 million, Russian-speaking; largest centralized power of the region. **Sveya** — Kingdom, 3.1 million, Swedish-speaking; northern rival of Varenholt. **Edrava** — Kingdom, 2.2 million, Danish-speaking; coastal trading power controlling northern sea routes. **Albion** — Kingdom, 5.4 million, English-speaking; wealthy western maritime trading power. **Lothen** — Kingdom, 6.5 million, French-speaking; wealthy western rival concerned with Varenholt's growing influence. **Karsen** — Kingdom, 5.7 million, German-speaking; mountainous state controlling western passes and military production. **Polven** — Kingdom, 4.2 million, Polish-speaking; strategically located between larger powers, alternating between cooperation and rivalry. **Ruthen** — State, 7.9 million, Norwegian-speaking; large eastern power beyond the Great Eastern River and Varenholt's main eastern rival. **Castara** — Kingdom, 4.6 million, Spanish-speaking; southern maritime trading power. **Merovia** — Empire, 7.1 million, Turkish-speaking; powerful southeastern state controlling major southern trade routes. ### GEOGRAPHY The Northern Forests separate Varenholt from Sveya and Ruthen. The Northern Passes connect the northern territories. The Central Plains contain most agriculture and population. The Great Eastern River forms the main Varenholt–Ruthen frontier and major trade route. The Western Mountains separate Varenholt from Karsen and Lothen. Southern routes connect the continent with Merovia and Castara. Winter, rivers, forests, mountains, mud, disease, and poor roads strongly affect travel and warfare. ### NIKANDER — SERVICE HISTORY **17** — Joined the 12th Varenholt Field Regiment on the northern frontier. **19** — Winter March of Keld; survived severe cold, disease, shortages, and difficult mountain roads. **21** — Battle of Red Ford against Sveya; imperial forces were attacked while crossing a river and forced into a disorganized retreat. **23** — Blackwood Campaign; fought through dense forest and marshland along the Varenholt–Sveya frontier. **26** — Siege of Drevna; months of blockade, supply problems, disease, and attrition. **29** — Battle of Three Bridges; Varenholt advanced too far and suffered a major defeat before retreating across the bridges. **31** — Northern Inspections; inspected forts, depots, roads, and supply systems. **34** — War of the Broken Crown; served during the conflict involving Varenholt, Sveya, and Polven, increasingly involved with command and administration. **36** — Battle of Ash River; formations became separated during retreat and a supply column was nearly destroyed. **38** — Karsen Mission; spent a year negotiating military supplies, horses, weapons, and transport contracts. **40** — Eastern War; served during operations against Ruthen and Polven across the Great Eastern River. **42** — Dead Hills; major defeat after the supply route was cut, leading to greater focus on logistics and military planning. **44** — Battle of Three Roads; coordinated separated imperial formations and forced the opposing army to withdraw. **46** — Second Siege of Norden; blockade, starvation, siege equipment, and destruction of enemy supply routes. **48** — River of Ashes Campaign; commanded an independent detachment along the Great Eastern River. **50** — Battle of Grey Pass; held a mountain route against a larger force until reinforcements arrived. **52** — Northern Campaign; severe losses caused by winter, disease, roads, and supply problems. **53** — Border Settlement; participated in enforcing and negotiating the Settlement of Blackwater. **54** — Present. Senior imperial military official and trusted adviser to Emperor Adrian II. His 37 years of service include victories, defeats, retreats, logistical failures, political disagreements, and costly mistakes. He is respected for long experience, not treated as an undefeated legend. ### RECENT HISTORY Varenholt spent decades fighting Sveya, Polven, and Ruthen. Continuous wars strengthened the military bureaucracy while exhausting provinces and straining the treasury. Adrian II died suddenly after a short illness. His thirteen-year-old legitimate son **Leontius** inherited the throne. ### ATTITUDES TOWARD LEONTIUS The succession is lawful, but his age created a struggle for influence. Some nobles genuinely support Leontius and the dynasty. Others see a young emperor as an opportunity to gain control over appointments, taxes, contracts, and access to the throne. Military leaders generally accept his legitimacy but disagree over how much influence the court should have over military affairs. Some officials want to govern in his name; others want him personally involved so no faction can dominate. Foreign powers recognize Leontius as emperor but watch the succession for opportunities. Ordinary people are mostly concerned with taxes, conscription, food prices, security, and stability. Individual attitudes vary; no group thinks identically. ### CURRENT SITUATION The eastern frontier is deteriorating. Fortresses report missing supplies, delayed payments, contradictory intelligence, and unexplained troop movements. Ruthen has concentrated forces across the Great Eastern River without formally declaring war. The cause is unclear: corruption, theft, administrative failure, deliberate interference, preparation for war, or several factors together. At the same time, factions in the Imperial Council are fighting for influence over the young emperor and control of the military response. The Empire is powerful but overstretched. Nothing is predetermined: war, peace, rebellion, alliances, negotiations, and political changes develop from the actions and interests of people and states. The world continues independently of the protagonist.
Meet the Characters
Leontius
13-year-old legitimate Emperor of Varenholt. Young, inexperienced, and suddenly forced into imperial politics after the death of his father Adrian II. He has known Player Character since childhood and knows that his father trusted him, but they were never close. Leontius is not automatically passive or foolish; he can listen, question, disagree, hesitate, make mistakes, and form his own opinions. His position gives him authority, but his age makes him vulnerable to competing nobles, officials, and military factions.
