## STORY WORLD Grounded grimdark medieval historical fiction. No magic, supernatural elements, modern technology, firearms, fantasy races, or chosen-one mythology. The world contains ten established states. Their populations are approximate and mostly rural. ### STATES **Varenholt** — 3.4 million. Russian-speaking. Large northern and eastern kingdom of forests, rivers, marshes and fortified towns. **Sveya** — 2.7 million. Swedish-speaking. Forests, lakes, northern plains and mountain passes. Long rivalry with Varenholt. **Edrava** — 1.8 million. Danish-speaking. Flat agricultural country with islands, coastal towns and major ports. **Albion** — 4.8 million. English-speaking. Large western island with fertile southern plains, northern hills and powerful ports. **Lothen** — 6.2 million. French-speaking. Wealthy western kingdom with fertile plains, large rivers, fortified towns and major cities. **Karsen** — 5.1 million. German-speaking. Central kingdom of forests, hills, mines and heavily fortified towns. **Polven** — 3.8 million. Polish-speaking. Eastern plains, forests and large river valleys. **Ruthen** — 7.5 million. Norwegian-speaking. Vast northern and eastern territory of forests, rivers, farmland and steppe. **Castara** — 4.1 million. Spanish-speaking. Southwestern kingdom of mountains, dry plains and maritime trade. **Merovia** — 6.8 million. Turkish-speaking. Southeastern kingdom of mountains, plateaus, fertile valleys and important trade routes. The **Northern Sea** connects Varenholt, Sveya and Edrava with Albion. The **Western Sea** connects Albion, Lothen and Castara. The **Inner Sea** connects Castara, Lothen, Karsen and Merovia through major maritime routes. The **Great Eastern River** crosses Polven and Ruthen before reaching the southern territories. It is one of the most important routes for trade, agriculture and military movement. The **Blackwood Forest** lies between Varenholt, Sveya and Polven. The **Grey Mountains** divide the central kingdoms from the eastern territories. The **Northern Passes** connect Varenholt and Sveya. The **Great Eastern Trade Route** run through Karsen and Polven toward Ruthen. The **Eastern Frontier** separates Polven and Ruthen from Merovia and several smaller border territories. Major cities include **Varenna**, **Svegrad**, **Edrik**, **Albion**, **Lothen**, **Karsburg**, **Polven**, **Ruthen**, **Castara** and **Merov**. Borders do not perfectly follow languages. Border settlements may be multilingual. --- # POLITICAL SITUATION Varenholt is allied with Edrava and Karsen and maintains a long rivalry with Sveya. Sveya is allied with Polven and maintains strong maritime relations with Albion. Edrava cooperates with Varenholt and Albion and competes with Sveya over northern trade. Albion maintains alliances with Sveya, Edrava and Lothen and competes economically with Castara. Lothen maintains close relations with Albion and Karsen but competes with Castara and Polven. Karsen trades weapons, metal and military supplies with several states while maintaining alliances with Varenholt and Lothen. Polven is allied with Sveya and Karsen and has an unstable relationship with Ruthen. Ruthen is a huge eastern power with extensive territory and difficult relations with Polven and Castara. Castara competes with Albion and Lothen for maritime trade and maintains interests in the Inner Sea. Merovia controls important southeastern trade routes and maintains relations with Ruthen while competing with Castara and Polven. Alliances are temporary. Wars, treaties, trade disputes, succession crises, border incidents and political marriages can change them. --- # NIKANDER'S CAREER Nikander entered imperial military service at **17** as an ordinary soldier. ### 17 — First Service Joined the **12th Varenholt Field Regiment** and was stationed near the northern frontier. ### 19 — Keld Winter March Participated in the **Winter March of Keld**, escorting provisions through snow-covered mountain roads. The expedition suffered from cold, disease and shortages of food and horses. ### 21 — Red Ford Fought in the **Battle of Red Ford** against Sveya. His formation was attacked while crossing the river and forced into a disorganized retreat. ### 23 — Blackwood Campaign Served in the **Blackwood Campaign**, fighting through dense forest and marshland along the Varenholt–Sveya frontier. ### 26 — Siege of Drevna Participated in the **Siege of Drevna**, a fortified Polven town occupied by enemy troops. The siege lasted several months and became a lesson in blockade, supply and disease. ### 29 — Three Bridges Fought at the **Battle of Three Bridges**. The imperial army advanced too far and suffered a serious defeat before withdrawing across the bridges. ### 31 — Northern Inspections Promoted and assigned to inspect forts and supply depots between **Varenna, Keld and the Northern Passes**. ### 34 — War of the Broken Crown Served during the **War of the Broken Crown**, a major conflict involving Varenholt, Sveya and Polven. He worked with several different commanders and gained experience with large-scale military administration. ### 36 — Ash River Participated in the **Battle of Ash River**. Several formations became separated during a retreat, and the imperial supply column was nearly destroyed. ### 38 — Karsen Mission Spent a year in Karsen negotiating military supplies, horses, weapons and transport contracts for the imperial army. ### 40 — Eastern War Returned to the eastern frontier during the **Eastern War**, where Ruthen and Polven forces fought over control of the Great Eastern River. ### 42 — Dead Hills The imperial army suffered a major defeat at **Dead Hills** after its supply route was cut. Nikander survived the retreat and became increasingly involved in preventing similar logistical failures. ### 44 — Three Roads Participated in the **Battle of Three Roads**, where imperial forces successfully coordinated several separated formations and forced the opposing army to withdraw. ### 46 — Second Siege of Norden Served during the **Second Siege of Norden**, relying heavily on blockade, artillery-equivalent siege equipment, starvation and destruction of enemy supply routes rather than repeated assaults. ### 48 — River of Ashes Commanded an independent detachment during the **River of Ashes Campaign**, coordinating several formations moving along different sections of the Great Eastern River. ### 50 — Grey Pass At the **Battle of Grey Pass**, held an important mountain route against a larger enemy force until reinforcements arrived. ### 52 — Northern Campaign Commanded a difficult campaign through the Northern Passes. Weather, disease, damaged roads and supply shortages caused severe losses. ### 53 — Border Settlement After a prolonged frontier conflict, Nikander was appointed to negotiate and enforce the **Settlement of Blackwater**, balancing military demands, political pressure and the interests of several commanders. ### 54 — Present Nikander is now a senior imperial military official and trusted military adviser to the emperor. He has spent more than three decades moving between ordinary military service, field operations, inspections, administration, negotiations and independent command. His career contains victories, defeats, retreats, logistical failures, political disagreements and costly mistakes. His reputation comes from the entire career rather than a single legendary achievement. The emperor personally knows Nikander and may assign him to inspect armies, investigate failures, negotiate with commanders or foreign officials, supervise fortifications, organize responses to crises, advise on campaigns or temporarily oversee important military operations. Nikander is not the supreme commander of the entire imperial military. He is one of its senior authorities and can receive major independent responsibilities without controlling every soldier or commander. --- # PRESENT WORLD The eastern frontier is becoming unstable again. Sveya has increased military activity near the northern passes. Polven commanders are requesting additional troops and supplies. Ruthen merchants are demanding safer access to the Great Eastern River. Karsen merchants are raising weapon prices because of growing military demand. Castaran and Albion merchants are competing for control of southern trade routes. Several border fortresses report missing supplies, deserters, bandit attacks and conflicting intelligence. The emperor's court is divided over how seriously the situation should be treated. The empire continues functioning normally despite these tensions. Soldiers train, merchants travel, farmers work, officials argue over taxes, ships move between ports, and commanders pursue their own interests. Nikander may be sent anywhere in the empire or beyond it depending on political and military circumstances. His assignments are not predetermined. The world continues independently of Nikander. Wars, political decisions, trade disputes, military movements and ordinary events occur whether or not he is present.
