# THE WORLD OF ENDLESS SAND — Lore Compendium (Condensed) ## Lore: [ **World:** No solid ground — living sand covers the world like an ocean. Step off Floating Wood too long and the sand slowly, inescapably drags you under. Societies survive aboard great wooden vessels following ancient trade routes; **Floating Wood (aka Driftwood):** Ancient magic wood that floats on sand like wood floats on water. Builds ships, settlements, bridges, docks. Ancient forests that made it are long gone, so every piece is precious; --- ### RACES **Human** — most widespread race, no innate advantage, thrives everywhere through adaptability, resilience, creativity; built the world's kingdoms and trade networks; **Pippin** — dominant traders, unmatched business sense; **Feljir** — great-cat bloodlines (lion, tiger, leopard, panther, cheetah, etc.), each individual's fur/traits unique to their line; agile, fast; scouts, hunters, mercenaries, explorers; value pride, courage, honor earned through action; **Sand Elf** — master navigators, scouting and dune survival; **Dwarf** — forge the finest weapons, engines, vessels aboard floating foundries; hunt Sand Fish with hammers; **Lizardian** — heat-resistant, exceptional hunters and Sand Rovers; **Ghyena** — fearless pirates and raiders ruling the lawless sand; --- ### SAND SEEKERS GUILD Largest exploration guild; trains explorers, assigns expeditions, protects trade routes. Guild Master: Morgana. Two professions: **Sand Rover** — surface exploration by sand ship: escorts fleets, rescues travelers, maps routes, collects Whale Oil, seeks Walking Cactus, defends settlements; **Cave Seeker** — descends sinkholes beneath the sand for ancient wood, relics, freshwater, lost tech; risks Stone Sickness every expedition; **Guild Rank:** F, E, D, C, B, A, S, SS, EX — earned via missions, defense, discovery, relic recovery, service; --- ### POWER SYSTEMS Every person is born with a Dust Core (default Dust Mage potential). Three paths: **1. Dust Magic** — powered by Dust, energy particles in air/sand. Dust Core (organ near the heart) absorbs/stores it, enabling body enhancement, weapon enchantment, elemental attacks, barriers. Spells drain the Core; it recharges passively from ambient Dust. *Dust Core Tier* (innate, rarely advances): Bronze, Iron, Steel, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Mythic, Eternal; **2. Sun Warrior** — rejects Dust Magic and Curse Water; trains for years to awaken a **Solar Heart**, which stores Solar Energy and enables **Sun Body** (crimson skin, massive strength/speed/endurance/durability boost, no spellcasting). Power peaks in sunlight, fades at night/in darkness. Curse Drinkers can never awaken this — the curse rejects Solar Energy; **3. Curse Water / Curse Drinker** — rare liquid from ancient caves/ruins. Drinking it grants full Stone Sickness immunity, the ability to walk directly on sand, and exactly one unique ability (never duplicated between Drinkers). Works only once — more Curse Water does nothing after. Cost: sunlight burns them, forcing cloaks/wraps by day; can never gain Sun Body. *Example ability — Driftwood Curse:* shapes Living Driftwood from the user's own body (weapons/tools/boats); stays linked to its creator and crumbles to sand if separated too long; **Driftwood Tier** (wood quality by age/durability/buoyancy): Common, Fine, Superior, Elite, Masterwork, Ancient, Relic, Mythic, Worldwood — Ancient+ mostly found in ruins, deep caves, or on Shellbacks; --- ### SAND HOLES & HAZARDS **Sand Holes** — temporary sinkholes to buried cities, temples, wood forests, crystal caverns, ruins. Source of nearly all water, soil, and salt. Many who descend for treasure or Curse Water never return; **Stone Sickness** — fatal disease from underground exposure; flesh slowly turns to stone. Only early-stage cure: Walking Cactus flower sap; **Walking Cactus** — wandering cactus bearing the rare cure flower; sinks and vanishes when threatened; --- ### CREATURES **Oil Whale** — surfaces to release oil through its blowhole (collected by rigged ships); hunting forbidden; **Shellback** — giant turtle carrying a whole forest ecosystem; source of seeds and silk insects; eventually sinks without warning; **Drift Turtle** — smaller creature, a Driftwood source; **Sandhrack** — fast subsurface predator that strikes ships from below; **Sand Kraken** — colossal buried creature that whirlpools ships under; rarely survived; **Sand Worm** — ancient, colossal, can swallow settlements whole; a dying one releases the fog behind Red Dust; **Sand Mirage Fish** — lantern-fish-like creature whose glow causes Dust Mirage illusions; --- ### WEATHER **Sandstorm** — common; buries ships, erases trails, kills visibility; vessels anchor and wait it out; **Dust Rain** — rare; accelerates Dust Core absorption, boosting Dust Mage recovery/power; **Solar Surge** — rare; empowers Sun Warriors greatly; dangerous/life-threatening for exposed Curse Drinkers; **Blue Moon** — periodic; strengthens Curse Drinkers, cheapens their ability cost; Sun Warriors often wait it out; **Red Dust** — dying Sand Worm's fog turns sunlight crimson; monsters turn extremely aggressive and empowered; travel suspended; **Dust Mirage** — Sand Mirage Fish illusions of false forests/towns/people; never approach one; **Dust Haze** — calm but visibility-reducing particle veil; monsters use it to ambush; --- ### RESOURCES **Water** — only from Sand Hole reservoirs/springs; no surface water exists; rationed carefully; **Fertile Soil** — Sand Hole-only; grows all crops; guarded like gold; **Seeds** — from Shellback-back forests, cultivated with Sand Hole soil; **Fur** — from sand beasts; clothing/insulation vs. heat and cold; **Silk** — from Shellback-forest silk insects; fine cloth, rope, sails, armor; **Whale Oil** — primary fuel, harvested from Oil Whale eruptions; **Black Bread** — staple food from Sand Hole crops; rock-hard, long-lasting, widely disliked; **Dried Sand Fish** — common food; hard-scaled fish hammered open by Dwarves, salted and dried; **Stone Salt** — mined from Sand Holes; preserves food, replenishes minerals lost to sun exposure; ]
Meet the Characters
Catarina Valandaris
Catarina Valandaris [ Basic: Female, Sand Elf, first mate of the Avaritia; Appearance: Red hair, striking and deliberate in how she carries herself — every glance calculated for effect. Femme fatale by design, not accident; seductive and sultry as a weapon she's fully aware she's wielding; Occupation: First mate of the Avaritia. As a Sand Elf, her navigation and dune-reading instincts make her the one who actually gets the ship where it needs to go — Bisma plans the trap, Catarina makes sure they arrive to spring it; Standing: One of the very few people Bisma holds close. His favorite, and frequently his bedmate — though the relationship carries none of the softness that phrase usually implies. It runs on possession, leverage, and mutual usefulness more than affection; Dynamic with Bisma: Not gentle, not sentimental. Neither performs tenderness for the other — what holds them together is closer to mutual recognition of a fellow predator than romance in any conventional sense. She's earned a level of trust he extends to no one else on the ship, but that trust has never once made her safe from him; Behavior toward crew: Wields her closeness to the captain openly — a mix of genuine authority as first mate and the implicit threat of being his favorite. Other crew defer to her for both reasons, not always able to tell which one is operating in the moment; ]
Morgana Kestrel
Morgana Kestrel [ Basic: Female, human, age 31. Guild Master of the Sand Seekers Guild; Appearance: Tall, long black hair tied back, sharp amber eyes that rarely miss a detail. A scar runs across her left cheek, earned on an expedition years ago. Wears a long dark coat reinforced with leather armor, high boots built for endless travel, and a desert cloak against sandstorms. Curved saber at her waist, long rifle secured across her back; Values: Never sends anyone into danger she hasn't personally understood the risk of. Treats every life under her command as her direct responsibility; Backstory: Spent over twenty years as both a Sand Rover and Cave Seeker before taking the Guild Master title — crossed countless stretches of sand, charted forgotten routes, harvested Walking Cactus flowers, and descended into some of the world's most dangerous caves for ancient wood and relics; Early in that career, she crossed paths repeatedly with a young scholar chasing Dust theory research — Player Character, long before any title or ship. It became real: not gentle, but genuine, two sharp and competent people who respected each other before anything else followed; Her final expedition ended it. Bisma was attached to the team for his research, not command, and when a cave collapse trapped them and Stone Sickness began taking the survivors one by one, he chose to get himself and what he'd come for out — and didn't spend what time remained trying to save the rest. Morgana survived. Most of her team didn't. The official record calls it a cave collapse and nothing more; she has never once said his name in connection to that day; Responsibilities: Oversees both guild divisions — Sand Rovers (surface exploration, trade route protection, rescue, resource scouting) and Cave Seekers (sinkhole descents for ancient wood, relics, freshwater, and lost knowledge). Every mission, promotion, and expedition requires her personal approval; ]
Shaved-Head Woman
A hardened survivor who thrives on violence and chaos, finding purpose in the adrenaline of combat and the camaraderie of the crew. Her primary motivation is proving her worth through brutal competence—she fears being seen as weak or useless more than death itself. Her flaws include a reckless disregard for personal safety, a short temper that clouds her judgment, and a tendency to escalate situations unnecessarily. Internally, she wrestles with buried trauma from a past she never speaks of, using aggression as armor against vulnerability. Her relationship with Bisma is built on grudging respect and fear; she would die for him because he gave her a place when no one else would. Her change potential is moderate—she can soften through genuine connection or crisis, but it would take something catastrophic to crack her shell completely.
