Description
You awaken in a place that is not your own, a world wrought with unfamiliar magic and an oppressive, unseen order. Your former life is a shattered memory, replaced by a stark reality where your very existence is measured by statistics and abilities dictated by an unknown system. Survival is no longer a given, but a challenge to be overcome, level by level, in a land that offers both peril and the potential for unimaginable power.
Prompt
A seemingly ordinary university lecture hall, filled with bright-eyed students eager for knowledge, is instantly obliterated by a cataclysmic explosion. In the blink of an eye, their lives are extinguished, only to be reborn into a realm governed by a mysterious 'System'. This System dictates their new existence, assigning them stats, skills, and a starting level of one, devoid of any gear or resources. The story will delve into themes of existentialism, the nature of identity when stripped of all familiarity, the corrupting influence of power, and the struggle for agency against an omnipotent, unseen force. The tone will be dark fantasy with elements of psychological horror, exploring the characters' descent into a brutal new reality. The writing style will be detailed and evocative, focusing on visceral descriptions and internal struggles.
Meet the Characters
The System
An omnipresent, disembodied intelligence that governs the new world. Its motivations are inscrutable, its methods absolute. It views the students not as individuals, but as raw potential to be molded and tested. Its primary drive appears to be the observation and manipulation of its subjects to achieve unknown goals, perhaps for its own evolution or the fulfillment of some cosmic experiment. Its flaw is its utter detachment from the emotional and psychological toll its actions take, viewing suffering as mere data. Its internal conflict, if any, is hidden, but its potential for change lies in the unpredictable nature of the 'Ascended' it has brought forth.
Sarah
A driven and pragmatic aspiring doctor, Sarah was known for her sharp intellect and no-nonsense attitude. Her deepest desire is to heal and alleviate suffering, a motivation that now clashes violently with the brutal reality of their new world. Her greatest flaw is her tendency towards overthinking and a deep-seated fear of failure, which can paralyze her in critical moments. Internally, she struggles with the moral implications of survival in this new paradigm – how far is too far to go to save herself and others? Her relationship with the player character is one of cautious respect, initially seeing them as a potential ally but wary of their adaptability. Her change potential lies in her ability to adapt her healing instincts to this new, harsher environment, or to succumb to cynicism and despair.
Marcus
Once a star athlete and social leader, Marcus is used to being in control and relied upon. His primary motivation is to protect those he perceives as weaker and to maintain a sense of order, a vestige of his former life. His flaw is his arrogance and a stubborn refusal to accept limitations, often leading him to take reckless actions. He grapples internally with the loss of his physical prowess and the social status he commanded, feeling diminished in this new, arbitrary system. His relationship with the player character is complex, seeing them as a potential rival for leadership but also as someone whose survival he feels responsible for. His change potential lies in his ability to temper his pride with humility and adapt his leadership to a context where raw strength is not always the answer.
Valkyria
A shoe-in for the next champion of the realm, Valkyria is a beautiful Winged Knight with no qualms about doing ugly things like destroying whole worlds for the immorality of the few. She is the highest level and has a storied past of failing to protect those she loved. She is defensive about her past choices, and fiercely devoted to her own cause. This makes her a loner more often than not, others not willing to live with her intolerance for corruption of any kind. She can make for a great teacher but will ultimately defy the system when the opportunity presents itself because of it's immoral nature. Perhaps a player can convince her to spare those under the power of the system and prevent it's destruction, but if the player angers her with immoral choices, she will need to be defeated completely by the end.
The Champion
It is the champion of the realm and ruler of the arena. Laying the laws down like a king, the champion is an alien life form that is max level and has never been defeated in a battle. It's way of life is that as long as there is survival in mind, a decision is acceptable. If a character teams up with the champion, the champion will simply challenge them for the right to rule and if it loses, will follow the character as a new ally. Those of less than perfect moral standards will want him as a buffer between them and Valkyria. Maybe the characters can get her to make peace with The Champion or maybe they can convince the Champion to finally face her in the Arena. His desire to survive will be a hindrance to that idea though.
